No accident nor injury was incurred by about 4,000 workers as they rendered 10 million “safe working hours” for the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) project's depot construction in Clark, Pampanga.
Project managers, workers and contractors marked the milestone today, Thursday, August 31, as they celebrated “10 million safe working hours” for contract package CPN05 under the NSCR’s Malolos-Clark segment.
CPN05 involves the construction of the depot building in Clark International Airport at the far-end of the 147-km NSCR system which will traverse from Clark, Pampanga to Calamba, Laguna.
The contract package was awarded by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to Posco E&C in July 2020. Civil works began in October 2020.
Engr. Narciso Preclaro Jr., DOTr Project Manager for the NSCR’s Malolos-Clark segment or N2, hopes the safe working hours exceed 20 to 30 million as the depot is expected to be finished in 2025.
“Ang ten million working hours ay hindi po maa-achieve kung hindi dahil sa inyo. Ito ay hindi lamang responsibilidad ng management, ito ay responsibilidad ng lahat,” Preclaro said during a short program at the depot construction site.
“Sana, itong achievement ng Posco E&C ay maging ehemplo, para lahat ng contractor ng construction works natin ay mag-adhere sa culture of safety,” the DOTr Project Manager added.
Posco E&C Project Manager Sangyeob Lee noted the milestone was “not easy to achieve,” saying that efforts have been done to prevent and avoid “all possible risk factors for a long time while thousands of employees carry out hundreds of construction activities every day.”
“We have taken a long journey to this 10 million safe working hours since the beginning of this project. But our journey is not over yet. In order to successfully complete this meaningful project of national importance, I have to only ask for your further dedication and hard work,” the Posco E&C official said.
Once completed, the 147-kilometer NSCR system will traverse from Clark, Pampanga to Calamba, Laguna, linking the Greater Manila Area to neighboring provinces.
About 800,000 commuters are expected to ride the new rail system daily by 2029.
